If you want to give your students the chance to stay abroad as part of an international seminar, we will support you in organizing academic exchanges that involve student mobility.
The FGYO’s funding program aims to support cooperation between European universities and increase student mobility between the partner-countries. Programs for PhD candidates are also eligible for funding. Participating students will have the opportunity to gain experience in universities in France and Germany first-hand, and to learn about the everyday academic life and practices of their peers.
We offer grants for a multitude of programs. Specific examples of funded university exchange programs are international scientific seminars, dynamic workshops or summer universities. It is important to note that the academic exchange, project or international seminar must have a clear relation to higher education to be eligible for the FGYO’s funding of student mobility. Student newspapers, specific workshops or networking projects for example can be supported.
The programs are usually organized by university lecturers in collaboration with colleagues from the partner countries France and Germany. The high number of university exchange programs and their diversity are due to the long tradition of the Franco-German partnership, which the FGYO supports vigorously.

Advantages of the program
By providing a chance for students to take part in an international seminar you might incentivize them to stay abroad. If students are considering studying abroad or taking part in a more long-term university exchange program, they will benefit from the offer you provide, for instance by improving their language skills and intercultural competences.
For students and faculty, a university exchange program with France and Germany constitutes a unique opportunity to foster the acquisition of scientific knowledge and to experience the similarities and differences between the different systems of higher education.
You and your students will have the chance to network with the next generation of French and German scientists and researchers. Use this opportunity for an academic exchange and talk about current research topics and approaches with your colleagues and their students.
How to sign up
Funding from the FYGO
Are you interested in organizing an academic exchange program? If so, the French or German partner institution hosting the exchange has to fill out the application form, add a short description of the project and send it to the FGYO office in Paris for consideration.
We give preferential treatment to projects involving new collaborations between French and German universities, or to applications from federal states where Franco-German cooperation is in line for further development.
Funding from the special intervention funds
To obtain funding from the special intervention funds for Central and Eastern Europe, South-East Europe and the Eastern Partnership, you can apply from the beginning of September until the 3rd of November of the year preceding the start of your project.
The selection of the programs takes place at the end of December; the organizers will be informed in January. They can then submit all documents required for the application.
Calls for applications for funding from special funds for other regions usually open individually during the second half of each year. The deadlines depend on the French and German Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
