Community Building Mitrovica (CBM) provides essential services that give the communities of Mitrovica opportunities to build peace in their everyday lives. Mitrovica faces tense relations, politically and culturally, between the Serbian majority North of the city and the Albanian majority South that have made opportunities for peacebuilding even after the war ended in 1999. The work of CBM has persisted and broken through these tensions to make meaningful connections between the people of Mitrovica, regardless of their ethnicity or where they live.
CBM has also initiated and participated as a partner in exchanges between youth, as well as other members of communities within Kosovo, and between Kosovo and Serbia; Kosovo, Serbia, France, and Germany; and with the Netherlands, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and other regional and international countries. These initiatives have strengthened intercultural understanding, encouraged collaboration, and built lasting networks of trust across borders.
These triumphs have taken many forms, from shared cultural events uniting business owners, community members, and politicians from North and South; to civic education schools that bring youth from different communities together to learn how to advocate for the issues that matter most to their shared community; and hosting workshops and services that educate and prepare students and community members to prosper in the wider communities we are building together.
